Business Continuity Planning (BCP)

To understand the critical dependencies on IT systems for our clients, we recommend that a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) be conducted.  This can be started through a series of user interviews with the department heads of a company.   Following this, an examination of various factors contributing to operational risk such as the business location and essential processes are examined to identify the most obvious and likely risks which could be encountered, and what the impact of failure would be.  A strategy for mitigating that risk is the next fundamental piece of the BCP, and once this has been established, it is relatively easy to prepare the instructions and assignments required to create a successful Business Continuity Plan.

Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP)

When our clients are heavily dependent on IT systems, and they discover there is a sizable risk to normal operations based on the BIA results gathered, it is recommended that they consider a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) where the business critical systems can failover automatically, or those systems can be automatically backed up for restoration in the event of catastrophic failure.  A good disaster recovery plan will help our clients identify the technology that is needed to recover, and what the necessary steps are to achieve their Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and their RPO (Recovery Point Objectives).  Unwired Logic has consulted with several of our financial clients for the design and build out for their hot / warm failover systems, and we have also prepared the technology cutover planning documents which are required to survive a major IT failure.

BCP Testing, Validation & Adjustments

After the planning and documentation has been prepared, we can assist clients plan for and execute a business continuity test, which can involve a disaster simulation to see if the RPO and RTO can be actually met as the criteria for success.  Normally a BCP test should be conducted once a year, and adjustments are made after each test to ensure compliance.
