What is Agile Project Management?
Agile Project Management, often also called Scrum, is a project management methodology primarily used in IT projects. This does not mean, however, that it can only be applied to IT projects. Because of its nature, agile is well suited for an open-ended and ambiguous task.
The traditional waterfall project management methodology follows a pre-defined plan and a linear approach. Phases, dependencies, and processes are clearly defined, making it easy to understand relationships and results.
In agile project management, on the other hand, the approach is value-driven and focuses on features that the customer needs. The crucial difference in agile project management is time-boxing. A time-box is the maximum amount of time spent on a task or project. The idea is: instead of working on a task until it is finished and evaluating how long it took, the task will be stopped after the time box is up and the team evaluates the work: Has the goal been met, fully or partially? This is repeated in iterations. Each event has its own timebox assigned to it.
At the start of every Scrum process is the Product Backlog – a list of required features and improvements. Next follows a sprint – a fixed time box, typically a month or less to turn ideas into value and achieve the sprint goal. Each sprint has defined events:
- Sprint Planning – as the name suggests, this is to lay out the work to be performed by the team
- Daily Scrum – a daily 15 meeting for the developers on the team
- Sprint Review – The team and stakeholders review the accomplishments of the sprint
- Sprint Retrospective – The conclusion of the sprint with a review of what went well and where improvements can be made.
Members of a Scrum team are the Scrum Master, product owner, and the developers. Scrum teams are small, non-hierarchical, and therefore agile. As Project Management Consultants our bilingual team has all major certifications such as PMP, CSM, and CSPO.
